How to Determine Your Hair Type

Hair Type Classification System

Hair is typically classified using the Andre Walker system, which categorizes hair into four main types (1-4) with subcategories (A, B, C) based on curl pattern. Type 1 is straight, type 2 is wavy, type 3 is curly, and type 4 is coily/kinky.

Quick Hair Type Test

How to easily determine your type:

1

Wash hair with clarifying shampoo

2

Let air dry without products

3

Observe the natural pattern

4

Compare with type descriptions

Basic Hair Types

There are four main hair types. You may have multiple types on different parts of your head.

Type 1: Straight Hair

Signs: No natural curl pattern. Hair lies flat from roots. Tends to be shiny.

Care: Lightweight products, volumizing shampoos. Avoid heavy oils.

Type 2: Wavy Hair

Signs: S-waves between straight and curly. Prone to frizz.

Care: Light mousses, sea salt sprays. Scrunch to enhance waves.

Type 3: Curly Hair

Signs: Defined curls. Prone to dryness and frizz.

Care: Deep conditioning, curl creams. Diffuser for drying.

Type 4: Coily Hair

Signs: Tight coils or Z-patterns. Most fragile type, most shrinkage.

Care: Heavy moisturizers, oils. Protective styles, LOC method.

Porosity and Density

Beyond curl pattern, other characteristics matter: porosity (how hair absorbs moisture), density (number of strands), and width of individual strands.

ℹ Porosity Test

Drop a clean hair strand in water. Floats = low porosity, sinks slowly = medium, sinks quickly = high porosity.

✓ Low Porosity

Use heat to help products penetrate. Lightweight products work better.

⚠ High Porosity

Hair loses moisture quickly. Needs protein treatments and heavier products.

How to Test Your Hair Type

Follow these steps:

Wash with clarifying shampoo

Remove all product buildup for accurate results.

Let air dry completely

Don't use a blow dryer or any styling products.

Observe natural pattern

Look at different sections of your head - pattern may vary.

Compare with classification

Determine which type (1-4) and subtype (A, B, C) matches your hair.

Test porosity

Do the water test to determine porosity level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, hair type can change due to hormones, age, pregnancy, or medications. Chemical treatments can also temporarily alter structure.

That's completely normal. Many people have wavier hair in the back and straighter in front. Adapt your care by zones.

Curly and coily hair typically doesn't need daily washing. 1-2x per week is often enough, with co-wash between washes.
